received the first patent for this nifty little machine that cleaned rugs. Hubert Cecil Booth took it a bit farther
in nineteen and one and received another patent, this one was very large, horse drawn and petrol driven unit. He
would park it outside the building that needed to be cleaned, having one or more long hose that went through the
windows. Two Americans had the same concept, so there are a number of inventers of the vacuum cleaners upright.
James Murray Spangler a lonely janitor in an Ohio department store figured out why he coughed so much when and
work and using the carpet sweeper. He fiddled around with an old motor and then attached it to a box stapled to a
broom handle. He used an old pillow case to collect the dust. Thus was the start of the vacuum cleaners upright.
One of his first customers to buy his invention, once he tweaked it was a cousin; her husband was William H. Hoover
and later became president of the Hoover Company. As they say the rest is history.
Mr. Hoover had a leather goods business and was being threatened by the new invention of the motor car. Seeing a
real good product and bought the patent from Spangler in nineteen eight and kept him as superintendent. Hoovers new
vacuum cleaners upright were very expensive and many could not afford to buy it. So he placed an add in the Post
offering ten days of free use of the vacuum cleaner to anybody who asked for it. It seemed to work as he started
receiving orders from around the world. Through the years Mr. Hoover worked on and perfected the vacuum cleaners
upright and sold millions.
